Coquitlam Hair Stories

  • Coquitlam Heritage at Mackin House 1116 Brunette Avenue Coquitlam, BC, V3K 1G2 Canada (map)

Join us for our opening night of our new exhibit - Coquitlam Hair Stories: From Barber Chair to Hair Care.

Step into the Salon of History:

Coquitlam Heritage’s new exhibit gives a glimpse into the history of hairdressing. Learn about the first hairdresser in Maillardville and see historic hairdressers tools and brushes, including a vintage barber chair and on loan from the  City of Coquitlam's Riverview collection two stylish hair dryer chairs.

A Crucial Part of Our Community:

Discover how hair is a crucial part of identity for the many diverse groups in our community. The exhibit delves into the significance of Black hair care and explores the importance of the hair and turban in the Sikh faith.

Interactive & Fun:

We invite you to find your local hairdresser among the pictures of Coquitlam hairdressers and perhaps try your hand at braiding.

The museum will be hosting a open house for the new exhibit on Friday, October 17th from 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM. Visitors can tour the new exhibit, enjoy complimentary refreshments, and participate in our Hair Competition! Come styled to impress - whether that be eccentric, beautiful, or somewhere in between, and let staff know you’d like to participate. The winner will receive a gift card for their next hair-styling haul!

Entrance by donation. No registration required.

Please note: We strive to create a welcoming community for all our guests, regarding of background. We ask those who participate in the Hair Competition to be mindful of the cultural sensitivity of many hair practices and styles, including but not limited to afros, hijabs, turbans, etc. Any individual who’s hair is styled in a way that could be deemed offensive or appropriative may be unwelcome to participate.
