Call for Docents!

Are you interested in playing an active role in the Mackin House Museum? Consider joining our dedicated group of volunteers! The Mackin House Museum is currently accepting applications for a new class of Docents. Please review the following information carefully before submitting an application.

What is a Docent?

Docents are at the heart of the museum experience. The word docent comes from the Latin word “docere”, meaning “to teach”. Mackin House Docents represent a group of trained volunteers who serve as a vital link between the public and Museum exhibits and facilitate learning by helping audiences of all ages understand and enjoy our local history and heritage.

Who should apply to become a Docent?

If you enjoy learning and sharing knowledge, the docent program offers the opportunity to learn about our local history and heritage. Senior high students and up are welcome to join our team. Volunteer docents must have a genuine appreciation for all visitors, including adults and children from diverse backgrounds, and must convey information in a clear, concise, and articulate manner. A love of learning is crucial. Volunteers should be prepared to make a year commitment.

Docent training and what’s involved….

Mackin House Museum will provide training and supply you with a Docent Manual and any other information to prepare you to lead interesting and educational tours. Some training will involve:

  • Required readings and research
  • Shadowing tours with seasoned Docents
  • Introduction to the Museum’s behind-the-scenes

Is experience necessary?

The only prerequisite is enthusiasm for our local history and heritage, a willingness to learn, and a commitment to the Museum and to the Docent Program!

How much will it cost?

Being a Mackin House Museum Docent is all about rewards! There is no charge for the program, we just ask that you cover a minimum of 12 tours per year, and say with us for at least one full year beyond training. By volunteering for the Docent program, you support Mackin House Museum with your time, knowledge, and enthusiasm!
